THE MARRIAGE WORKOUT: Rest…Taking a break

By |May 20th, 2013|

A 6-year Phoenix Police officer and Iraq war veteran was recently killed in a hit-and-run in the middle of the city of Phoenix, AZ, leaving behind a wife and child.

I read this story during my layover in the Nashville airport, waiting for our plane to Ft. Lauderdale, where my wife and I and six friends will cast off with Royal Caribbean for five days. I found myself wanting to do something, call somebody… flex some sort of spiritual muscle to provide aid for the families in pain.

But the mechanism was not there. I was not in a position to do anything, and didn’t have the resources or the time.  (Ever felt that way before?)

The Marriage Workout: How Muscles Work

By |May 13th, 2013|

I’ve been blessed with a bad memory.

What? Bad=blessed? How do you figure?

Last Wednesday, some out-of-town friends of mine, known as the Esther Melody Band, came to visit us from Nashville, TN. I hadn’t seen them in 3 years, since I first met them at the GMA event, but I couldn’t get time off during the work day to hang. During our time of acquaintance, I collaborated with them on a few minor projects, and we checked in with each other several times a year, staying pretty in-touch for people living several thousands of miles away from each other. On this occassion, however, my wife, Anna, was able to get them a slot at the Wednesday chapel service of Family Life Radio headquarters, where she works. Anna ended up taking off and spending most of the day with them shopping and such.

I had been looking forward to this visit for a long time, and now I was stuck at work, unable to spend the time with my friends, which I had so wanted to do. And my WIFE was not only getting a day off work, SHE was enjoying the benefits of this relationship I spent almost 3 years cultivating.

That was my time. That was my fellowship.I wanted my blessing.(At least so went the thoughts in my head.)

The Marriage Workout: Asking the Body-Building Experts

By |May 4th, 2013|

Welcome back to the Marriage Workout Series.

This week, I decided that I was going to learn how to do pull-ups.

So I got a pull-up tracking app. I needed to learn some technique for beginners, so I let the app direct me to youtube for “how to do pull-ups.”And then, it was as if the clouds parted, and through the glare… I saw that I had found…

Scooby.

This 3,485-pound mass of muscle is a gem, with a fantastic voice-appearance mismatch to boost. I suspect his super-attractive hat is to disguise the fact that his scalp muscles may be past their prime… either way he could probably kick Captain Hammer’s butt.

Anyway, I picked Scooby out of the long list of Pull-up technique videos, not only because of his sweet fisherman’s cap, but because of his MUSCLES of MASSIVENESS. I thought, “Ok, HERE’S the guy to teach me about seriously gaining muscle mass, because he’s obviously good at it.”

So I followed his technique, and did my reps. When I woke up the next morning, I could not believe the  soreness that had resulted from those 6 simple reps. I had worked muscle groups I probably hadn’t seriously worked in years… maybe ever. OUCH!
